I used to teach English at Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University. The students there were amazing, and a pleasure to work with.
Later my girlfriend asked me to help her learn English. She was watching a video that showed English words written in Thai. I told her that kind of memory has no context. Everything is relationships, and you need relationships to form lasting memories.
When I use the map on my phone in Thai, it says something that sounds like “leo sai, leo kwa.” I know they mean turn left and turn right, not because I memorized them, but because the sounds are tied to the act of turning.
So I wrote this book that way: every word arrives with an image and a moment, so it has a relationship to life. The reader has to be in a relationship too, and that is the reason for a story, the kind of drama Thai readers already enjoy.
Tourism is in decline. I hope this book can help the people who work in it, and show visitors something of the lives of the people who serve them.
